Art Deco met Murano

Art Deco first appeared in France just before World War I and began flourishing internationally in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s before its popularity waned after World War II. The style is often characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation. Art Deco was a globally popular style and affected many areas of design. It was used widely in consumer products such as automobiles, furniture, cookware, china, textiles, jewelry, clocks, and electronic items such as radios, telephones, and jukeboxes. It also influenced architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion, graphic arts, and cinema.

Blue Mountain Pottery Collection

Blue Mountain Pottery was Canada's largest manufacturer of quality giftware pottery from 1947 until the plant closed for good December 2004. Located in Collingwood, Ontario, the uniqueness of Blue Mountain Pottery is a combination of the rich red clay, used in the moulding of the items, and the special glazing used to create the various shades of colour called "Reflowing Decorating". Collecting Blue Mountain Pottery is still popular by many and, as time goes on, will become much more difficult to find in perfect condition. All pieces that had a closed base had one of a variety of BMP mould marks. For items that had no base including most of the bird and animal items, they were sold with stickers or tags, many long since lost.

Classic Meets Life

The aristocracy changed the color schemes and furnishings in their homes much less than the upper and middle-classes, colors were fresh and light, with an informal feel. Patterns were feminine, with flowers and floral designs being very popular. Bamboo and wicker was the material of preference in Edwardian times, which added to the already delicate ad breezy nature of the style. Other furniture was reproductions, drawing influence from baroque, rococo and empire style. The wing chair is a classic shape, and upholstery favored chintz and damask in pale colors.

Mid Century Modern

Scandinavian design was very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, democratic design and natural shapes. The term Scandinavia only refers to the Three kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. It can be used colloquially to refer to five contries, adding Finland and Iceland. Glassware (Iittala – Finland), ceramics (Arabia – Finland), tableware (Georg Jensen – Denmark), lighting (Poul Henningsen – Denmark), and furniture (Danish modern) were some of the genres for the products created
